Tai Raro Takiwaa Māori Ward
Waikato District Council
1, TE TIRITI IN ACTION
I believe Te Tiriti o Waitangi must be more than words on paper, it should shape every decision and policy of the Waikato District Council. Embedding Te Tiriti principles ensures that our voices are heard, our values respected, and our communities included in the governance of our rohe. As your councillor, I will advocate for Te Tiriti in action at the local level so that decision-making reflects fairness, partnership, and accountability.
2, PROTECT OUR TUUPUNA AWA
Waikato te Awa is the lifeblood of our rohe and central to our identity. Its wellbeing affects us all from drinking water to recreation, food gathering, and spiritual connection. As councillor, I will stand firm on protecting the awa, holding polluters accountable, and ensuring that decisions about water use honour our responsibility as kaitiaki. When the river thrives, our people thrive.
3, CLEAN WATER & INFRASTRUCTURE
I will advocate for the Council to place greater emphasis on maintaining and upgrading essential infrastructure. Clean, safe drinking water and effective wastewater systems are vital for the wellbeing of our whānau. By ensuring investment is directed towards improving what we already have, we can build stronger foundations before committing to larger, new projects.
4, FAIR RATES FOR MĀORI WHĀNAU AND WHENUA
Rates increases hit Māori whānau and whenua especially hard, particularly where land has multiple ownership or carries cultural responsibilities. I will ensure that Council decisions properly consider these realities, so rates are fair and affordable for our people. Our whenua is not just property, it is our tuupuna connection, our future, and it must be respected in how Council manages rating policy.
